The term animation usually conjures up images of Saturday morning cartoons, Disney talking animals, or wise-cracking family sitcoms on prime-time TV.  The films programmed in this series are intended to expand this notion of animation to include the examples from the hundred-year tradition of animated shorts made by one "hand" or a small team of collaborators.

Produced alongside the history of commercial animation, the techniques and aesthetics pioneered in each of these films often make their way into advertisements, commercial films, and music videos.  Claymation, multiple-exposure, hand-painted and computer generated images explore themes such as menstruation, global warming, anxiety and William Blake's poetry in these American and European shorts.
