The Loft Video Gallery
The Loft Video Gallery is a dynamic viewing space located just outside the venue where both casual passer-by and purposeful viewers can immerse themselves in captivating film and video. Curated on a monthly basis in partnership with campus and community guests, The Loft Video Gallery is a fresh take on how we engage with film in public spaces.

Relationship Therapy
Curator: Monika  Lang
Whether it be intimate, casual, secretive, direct, inverse, or in/dependent, we all have a relationship with someone or something. In this seemingly casual viewing space, a multitude of screen relationships will play out media pieces that dare viewers to identify the myriad of relationships based in reality, then reinterpreted through art. In spirit of the month of February, I ask the spectator to reevaluate what being in a relationship means and venerate the power of relationships in any form.

The structure of the exhibition allows the audience to approach the idea of a relationship at the most digestible level while progressing to a more cerebral break down of the foundation of a relationship. By dividing this exhibition into 3 phases (Literal, Representational, and Abstract) the viewer is able to approach the topic one phase at a time while shifting into another through a constant loop. Beginning with the Javier Recio Gracia's The Lady and the Reaper a bond is formed in this comedic tale of an elderly woman mourning her husband. The shift from literal to representational occurs with Ei Toshinari's Lady in Red forcing the viewer to become a voyeur. By the end of the exhibition we see artist Jennifer Reeves film The Girls Nervy she objectifies her relationship with film by breaking it down to the mere celluloid.

Monika Lang is currently working towards her B.A. in Visual Arts Media at the University of California San Diego. Her work encompasses digital video as well as photography with an interest in form and space as well as an emphasis in the gentrification of urban spaces, the self, and the meaning of silence. Outside of her work she enjoys hiking, cycling, traveling, and reading tacky foreign novels.
