about film
ArtPower! Film at UC San Diego presents an eclectic mix of interactive film experiences. This season's series include:
21st Century Underground Chinese Films: Themes of power, politics, and passion play out in this trio of underground films from China. Co-curated by UCSD Professor Paul Pickowicz, these provocative films are forbidden to play in the public theaters of China. Sponsored by the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) at UC San Diego.
DocCulture: Highlighting the power of film to create communities and inspire action, this trio of documentary films examines issues related to global health, poverty, and education. Off-screen, the films encourage action through ambitious civic engagement campaigns fueled by social media tools. The DocCulture films that make up this series first screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011.
Film Mentorship Program: New this season, ArtPower! Film inaugurates the Film Residency Program at High Tech High Media Arts (HTHMA). Through screenings, panel discussions, and conversations with directors, the Film Residency Program will provide advanced film and media students at HTHMA with an opportunity to become active participants in the creative process. This residency program was created in collaboration with classroom teachers to target specific themes in the twelfth grade HTHMA curriculum.
Foovies [Food + Movie]: Food takes center stage with this trio of international films, uniting friends and families and metaphorically bridging social and political divides. Stimulate your mind and body with these great flicks and unbelievably good bites by Zanzibar at The Loft.
Fresh Air Films: ArtPower! Film invites you to have an outdoor cinematic experience with this season’s Fresh Air Films. Bollywood hits are paired with a vintage vignette each night. Grab a blanket and meet us under the stars.
Special Screenings: ArtPower! Film presents an eclectic mix of special screenings this season that examine family ties, political uprisings, and catastrophe. This year we also join forces with the San Diego Asian Film Festival during their festival week to present Oxhide II.
Up&Coming Student Film Festival: The 5th Annual UCSD Up&Coming Student Film Festival and Press Rewind continues to celebrate and foster the talents of student filmmakers and musicians. A pre-festival workshop is designed to assist emerging filmmakers in preparing their film for professional eyes and refining the skills and knowledge to be the Next Big Thing in film.
Vintage Vignettes: Each Fresh Air Films feature will be preceded by vintage shorts that showcase a diverse cross-section of our forgotten film history, including advertisements, cartoons, instructional videos, and other lost treasures.
